Forty mile an hour winds? Eight-foot waves? But I think I'll stick with Neil Schulman and with my previous statement that kayakers overestimate winds at at least 150% of value, and wave height at 200% of value. Motorcycle memories of what 40 mph winds sound like are no substitute for an anemometer reading. By the way, I'm not saying that everyone should always be reading the wind speed on an anemometer, but then don't report that it is blowing 40 unless you know it was blowing 40. Remember my longterm sailor who always told me that the wind was 20, and then my anemometer said 11. My suggestion? Get an anemometer and take it out kayaking--you will be amazed!
