I've always just taped cable before threading it in both sailing and kayaking applications. When you do the crimp (nicopress sleeve) make sure you get it pressed as tight as the tool will allow and remember that as it is compressed in diameter it will grow in length. You need to leave just a bit of cable sticking out before you begin compressing the sleeve or you end up not getting maximum holding power. Personally I try to keep the end short enough that all of the cable end is inside the sleeve even if it means part of the crimp is only holding one side of the cable loop.
