I haven't paddled that route, but I have saied it. Mark mentions one super important point and that is Admiralty Inlet. I would want to be on the west side long before reaching the inlet. I think if one hugged the shore there shouldn't be a problem and when you round the corner and head for Port Townsend, I wouldn't make a straight shot for it, but that would totally depend on conditions.
