This is a bit of a follow-up to the post (and following comments) by Snafu regarding kayaking in Crete that expanded into a discussion about another kayaking option in the Greek islands.
Milos is about a 30 minute flight from Athens and is very unspoiled by tourism compared to other Greek islands. Rod Feldtmann has an excellent kayaking operation that really lets you experience the island and all it has to offer. You can arrange camping options, but most kayakers pick to stay at a number of small b&b-type locations close to Rod's wife's cafe. Each day has the group heading out to a different part of the island (based on optimal wind direction) for a day of paddling and then returning the village in time to freshen up for dinner. There are enough different routes that even with 6 days of paddling you don't repeat the same route twice.
The paddling around Milos was awesome! The shoreline has sheer cliffs hundreds of feet high towering above you, sea caves to explore and many arches to paddle through. There's even a shipwrecked oil-tanker to paddle past! There is also the chance on a couple of the routes to do some open-water crossings to neighbouring islands.
Our group had a real mix of paddlers, some with much experience and some with very little. Rod does a great job at making sure everyone is having a good time, not pushing the rookies too hard, but still challenging the better paddlers. He'll even take time enroute to practice rescue and rolling skills if you're interested.
Obviously, we had a great time kayaking in Milos and would recommend it to anyone who is considering this type of trip. Rod has a great website www.seakayakgreece.com that has lots of information and excellent photos. He even gives everyone a cd of photos he takes of you during your trip!
