Does anyone have any experience paddling Lake George in the Adirondack region of NY? I'm looking for thoughts about best areas to explore and/or access points. Thanks!

Hello Landlubber, I've been boating on Lake George since the early 50's...lake was relatively deserted back then. Now, the lower half of the lake is pretty busy. I'd recommend putting in up around Bolton Landing; you can then head north or south as the mood suits you. A very beautiful and clean lake, but watch out for the "water cops"...they'll nail you every chance they get. Best time of year there is September/October after Labor Day. BobU...Passat G3...Enjoy!

Bob,
You mention watching out for the "water cops" on Lake George, just out of curiosity what kind of violations are they looking for in regards to kayaks?
Michael

Davidc,
I have quiet a bit of experience there as well and I could not agree with BobU more. My family has been summering there since the early 50's and we are now welcoming our 4th generation to that mix.
For more information on Bolton Landing and paddling on the lake, contact Lake George Kayaks (http://www.seakayakermag.com/advertisers/_Outfitters_NAtlantic.htm) I'm sure they can give you plenty of excellent resources on any question you could possible ask.
Out of curiosity, Are you looking at doing daytrips or overnight trips? There are plenty of public parks located on the islands of Lake George

Thanks for the info! My wife and I made it there for a visit last weekend (our holiday weekend is the week before the US Memorial Day). The weather wasn't great but we did get out on the water both Tuesday and Wednesday (not bad for our first trips of the season). Bolton Landing has a couple of small parks right on the water with nice sandy beaches and even docks to launch from. We stayed at Chelka Lodge in Diamond Point, a very nice base for day trips. We didn't see any "water cops", although it was pretty quiet around there as everyone was still preparing to open for the holiday.

Make sure you paddle around the base of Rogers Rock...It is neat area...it is also a great rockclimb which is only accessable by boat.

I camp on the islands in the Glen Island group. This June I will be on Pine Island for 4 days. I have had only good encounters with lake patrols, they generally are looking for reckless powerboats.

Hi Paul, I've done Turtle Island (site32 is great) and Big Burnt so far. I only "discovered" Lake George a few years ago but I am trying to make up for lost time. The islands with single sites look awesome; I mean, how great is it to have your own island on such a wonderful lake? Accordingly, the reservations are booked far into the future for those little islands.
I've found the staff at the ranger station on Glen Island to be very friendly and helpful. Tell them what you are looking for, eg lots of sun, views, etc. and they will recommend specific sites.
Cheers! James
