I recently tried a new prodcut called APALS; All Purpose Adhesive Light Strips-AIR on the back of my PFD and the bow and sides of my Kayak. These are waterproof thin LED lights with intergrated battery that are encased in a waterproof sleeve and have a peel off adhesive that sticks to anything.
They com ein colors so I use white for the top bow and red for port side and green for starboard side. I used amber for the back of my PDF. These can be set to fast strobe, slow strobe, steady on or off and run for around 70 hours. The are super thing and weigh less than half an ounce. These are made for the military but work great for night time safety for kayakers.

I kayak at night quite a bit sometimes in areas which have heavy boat traffic. I use the proper lights, etc. but have talked to some of the boaters who have almost collided with me or observed me at night. The thing they always comment on are the two large pieces of reflective tape I have on the back of my paddle blades. They obviously work well and reflect moonlight, etc. as the blade moves: all angles get covered. Cheap and effective. I even put a few on the sides of my kayak for increased safety. I know that they have saved my ass on a few close calls!
The problem with using LED, strobes, etc. are that they can seriously decrease your night vision if your eyes are exposed on a continual basis...also very distracting,
The stripes on the paddle blade work and are always facing away from you.

These are all cool suggestions for night fishing. I use a combination of all these things in one system from Illumarine. Saw them at PaddleFest in Cincinnati last summer. Their website is www.headtoboat.com. Pretty neat headlamp/kayak lights and they reflective decals for your boat. I'm gonna have to try the paddle blade idea.
