I'm relatively new to kayaking and looking to upgrade from my first in order to advance my paddling skills. I'm 5'1" and not willing to put down my weight in writing (let's just say, I need to lose more than a few pounds - and want kayaking to be a part of the solution).

I have an opportunity to purchase either a Nighthawk 16 or a Merlin LT, both previously used but in great condition and at a great price. I will be paddling rivers, some lakes, and possibly some open seas down the road.

I'm looking for some advice as to which boat would be more appropriate. I have an Easky 13 right now but would like to upgrade. Is a 16 foot boat too much for someone of my stature? How about for my intended use? One of the rivers I paddle does have some mild rapids which I've conquered easily enough with the Easky. Does that matter?

Sorry for all of the questions, but looking to make the right choice for me and my situation. Thanks in advance for any input.

The 16' boat is going to have a lot more potential for cruising and you already have a thirteen foot boat, so going for another wouldn't be much of an upgrade. That is not meant as a comparison of the Esky and Eddyline--just the length of the boats. The sixteen footer weighs about 7 lbs. more than the Merlin, so that might be a factor. I assume the Esky is polyethylene, so it probably weighs within a couple of pounds of the 16 foot Eddyline.

No, I don't think the 16' boat would be any problem for you. I would suggest that you give it a very thorough inspection for damage and pay close attention to the seat adjustment device. I would also look for warping, or other irregularities in the hull. Eddyline had a few problems a few years ago with the thermoplastic, but they got it figured out.

You said the boats were at a great price. How much?

According to the owner of the Nighthawk, it's been kept inside and had very little use as he decided kayaking wasn't for him (his wife's passion more than his). I'm going to look at it today. $1600 for the Nighthawk. Not sure what year it is.

The Merlin is at an asking price of $1300. Thought that was a little steep so I'd see if he would budge.

Thanks for your input, btw. Much appreciated.

Since he is getting out of the sport - one thing to ask: does the price include things like spray deck, paddle(s), paddle float, float bags etc? If it does those might be pretty fair prices.
