Looks like this is catching on. Here are a couple of videos I shot that show how much fun it is to bring your river boat to the coast. And the best part is NO shuttling Point Bonita Califorina

Nice video. Good reminder to keep an eye to the outside. That rogue wave could have ended badly. I used to paddle down there in the late 80's and a few guys would take WW boats rock gardening then too. I paddled a Tsunami X-1. There were a couple of guys who built add-on skegs for their Perception Dancers to improve tracking a little on long coastal paddles.

Here is my example of why you'd want to always keep an eye on the outside - taken with a deck cam aimed at me also in the Point Bonita area, but on a different day (and with long boats):

Well there is one that's not on the NR channel that was posted above. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfVIwRcJigI

And about taping skegs on ww boats, great idea. The best way you can paddle some distance with these things on a long windy day on the coast is with a skeg. I am lucky enough to have bought a Pyranha Fusion last year that comes with a retractable skeg.

I wholeheartedly endorse the ocean/dynamic location with a WW boat. In fact, I'm a bit of a pain in the A$@ about it to some of my paddling buddies (such as NickJC). Those short little WW boats will allow you to get in close to features, in conditions, that you would never approach in a composite sea kayak. They'll also wear you out trying to get anywhere.

And for those of you who don't see the similarity of WW boats to sea boats give it a shot. You may be surprised what that 8' long boat can do in the right location that your long boat won't.

Rock Gardening in WW boats

Since posting this subject a while ago we have added a few more Pyranha Fusions to the fleet. We had 8 of them out on the coast the day I filmed this new video. I have found this boat can easily keep up with a sea kayak as long as you are doing a relaxed pace. Also with the skeg down this boat tracks very well even in strong wind and I can comfortably do 10+mi coastal paddles in it.

Here's a new one of some ocean wall play in Elk, near Mendocino CA. These short boats are to much fun!

well, i just love paddling in WW kayaks but Whitewater kayaking or canoeing is not a solo sport; so be safe during solo paddling.
