What is the correct length paddle to use for a seda tango which is 26" wide at the front seat (and rapidly narrowing in front of seated position) and 29" wide in back, with the widest part of kayak where paddle first enters water? Front person is 5'4" and rear is 5'8" we vary from high to low angle.

Sheepie, I hope you are going to give as much consideration to the style and quality of paddles as you do to the length. That's not to say that I believe length is a minor factor, but it is somewhat dependant on personal choice.

You might be able to get an educated estimate from the folks at Werner on their website.

I might be out of line here for assuming that you are relatively new to paddling, but I would strongly suggest that you steer clear of the plethora of cheap paddles that are on the market these days. I can't believe the junk that our local sporting goods store has chosen to display. They used to have some pretty good paddles, but it looks like cheap is the new wave. Go to a real kayak shop.

Thanks for responding. Actually I was going to buy a real expensive paddle in the 200-320 dollar range. I presently have bending branches wooden paddles ( with Kevlar reinforcement on the paddle face) 220 and 230cm which are fairly light at around 28-29 ounces. I like the paddles but would like lighter paddles. As far as length, when I'm in the rear of the boat the 220 works but requires precision to place paddle close to the boat. The 230 works ok. My question is how to know if I should get a 240cm paddle. I would hate to spend $300+ and figure out I need a different length.

See, that's what I get for assuming. You apparently are not all that new to paddling. Good for you for looking for quality paddles.

My guess is that even though the boat you are talking about is a bit beamy, a 240 paddle would be a bit long for either a 5'-4", or 5'-8" paddler. But again, it's what feels right to you.

My most used paddles are 230's, but I am 6'-2" tall and even so, I will admit that that is too long when I go into a higher angle mode. When I switch to a shorter paddle it takes a while to feel as secure when bracing and for some maneuvering strokes.

If you haven't looked at the newer Werners, I would highly recommend taking a look at their ferrules. They are the neatest that I've seen and work totally flawless. I don't know if they are a Werner exclusive, but I have never seem them on another brand.

I have tried a couple of paddles that have ferrules that allow for length adjustment (Bending Branches and Aqua Bound), but I haven't bought one yet. Maybe someone who has experience with them could comment on their durability etc.

I am thinking about a straight shaft werner kalliste in 230 length ($319) just wish I could try a 240 first. adjustable length would be nice. Of course that would come with a weight penalty. There is a carbon Aqua bound on sale that adjusts from 215-230 for $250. If it would adjust from 225-240 than would be perfect. Does aqua bound make an adjustable paddle like that or 220-235 adjustment.

Sheppie, I just thought it might be worth mentioning that REI has the Werner Camano on sale for $198.69--normally $265. If it's like the one I have, it has a carbon shaft and weighs 25 ounces. It's my #1 cruising paddle for my biggest boat.

Some kayak stores will match sale prices.

Amazing! I just got home from REI with my new Camano paddle. And then read your advice. Best part is REI has a 100% satisfaction policy so I can try and if I decide to get a Kalliste later (hopefully at a lower price than $319) I still can. I got A Red 230cm matches the boat.

Depending on what you are used to, the Camano might feel different and be a little demanding. I can't explain why, but at times I have felt a little torque and also at times I get a litle plop, plop (noisy entry) on one side, or the other, but when my form is better, the paddle is a precision tool.

How do you like that ferrule? Be sure you pay attention to what they say about not using any lube on it.

Ferrule is very nice. And recessed button is nice to. Over all I like the paddle (5 miles so far). I tried a Kalliste briefly and felt much lighter, the Camano is not heavy by any means, but it's extra weight must be in the blades as I could definitely tell the difference. I am now considering the Werner high angle paddles also as I have read a few people say it's easier to switch paddle style angles with the high angle paddles versus the low angle paddles.if that makes any sense.

High angle is going to be a real workout in your tandem. That might be alright for a short run, but for long cruises I think you're going to need a lower angle.
