Just returned from a week in Punta Allen at the end of the road south of Cancun and Tulum on the Yucatan Peninsula. Known mostly for bone fishing, whatever that is.

A very beautiful place (no better place to sip a margarita on the beach), but the Siam Kaan Biosphere does not welcome independent kayakers in any way, shape or form (even tho I had purchased the mandatory day pass x 5 days). The park warden tried to arrest me and confiscate my Feathercraft because I did not have a paid guide as I approached the offshore reef.

It wasn't about protecting fragile park resources. I was headed out to where 20-30 powerboats were milling around fishing probably. A lone kayaker wasn't going to add to the damage or chaos.

I am not against paying guides to support the local economy, but the only option was one in a motor boat. Not really what I was looking for.

I will stick to the west coast of Mexico from here on out...
