Tom Yost is known as the home-built folder guru but recently he has designed and built a couple of impressive non-folder designs in skin-on-frame. I'm a fan of SOF but mine have been low volume Greenland designs (like Christopher Cunningham's book). I've been looking for something that I could use in any situation including overnight trips and big crossings.

I think his Baidarka is just plain beautiful and I'm horny to build one. I think he nailed the dimensions I was looking for in my next kayak. Many SOF builders are going for extreme narrowness which I think is a mistake. Sure they may be faster and easy to roll but the loss of other attributes isn't worth it. So I'm really interested in his Baidarka.

I think Tom was mostly just experimenting with the clear covering I doubt it's strong enough to hold up to some abuse. But I guess you'll have to ask him about that.

Tom gives instructions and guidance for building his boats free of charge. More info can be found at http://yostwerks.com/
