I looked for some after market kayak seats for my Solstice with no luck except Redfish. I need a wider seat. Anyone know of custom seats like they may put in wood boats?

thanks.

Do you need a seat with an integral backrest? Aside from rec boats, most kayaks are equipped with a fixed or moveable pad or saddle to sit on, complimented by a separate backband with cam'ed ropes or straps for adjustable support. Many paddlers remove the installed seat and attach some padding directly to the hull to lower the center of gravity by 1-2". My older bones appreciate comfort and I like my Tempest seat. Why go aftermarket? Most parts can be ordered from a kayak manufacturer by their dealers.

I happened to be at Cabellas today and saw what Old Town uses in their new Cayugas. If that seat isn't big enough and cushy enough, I don't know what would be.

Big cushy seats with high backrests are great on land for post-paddle relaxation. The Cayuga backrest on the O.T. website appears to extend 4" above the rear deck. You really don't want to hump a floppy backrest when re-entering or to try to fasten a skirt over a piece of parlor furniture. Comfort can and should be secondary to good design that promotes good paddling.

I needed a wide base seat from Current Design which is an option. The dealer said they would not sell it to her. I called and ordered it from CD. I installed it over the weekend. Looks like stock and should fit me better. The other seat killed me after a short time when I started working my hips and torso. I bought the Solstice used for a bargain and now it is perfect! That is why I was looking for after market when dealer said they won't sell one. Whole thing was just crazy. Thanks for you help!

Dog, great news; glad you've finally found comfortable seating for your Solstice. It is critical for long-term paddling enjoyment to feel good in the cockpit all day, every day. I have my current boat now at just the peak of comfort and good posture for both relaxed and aggressive paddling, and it sure feels good, even at the end of a long day's paddle.

Can't wait for Sunday for a long painless cruise in the marshes on the south shore of Long Island. The one I rented had the wide base seat and was great. Looks like factory install and that is what I wanted too. Boat is perfect now and it was a steal when I got it. I ordered more books and videos also. Great sport you can do with friends or alone.

I have this in one of my yaks and intend to put it one other.

Very good hip contact and very comfy.

I have no affiliation with site or product.

Wide base seat was fairly easy to install with a bit of glass work anyone could do. Went out for four hours and it was great to be comfortable. I could easily convert it bad to a standard seat just as easy. Whole thing looks just like factory install.
