Hello, my first post so here goes.

our insurance company Pemco just said they will not insure our kayaks under a marine policy since it doesn't have a motor. Even though they would insure a sail boat, he was clear that it wouldn't apply for a kayak. Our homeowners has a limit on boats of $1500 total and we need more coverage than this.

What experiences have people had with this issue? Boat coverage vs homeowners personal property? Have you used a separate company for your kayaks altogether than homeowners or auto? Thanks.

Some insurance companies will allow you to increase the limit for a particular category (for a cost of course). With State Farm we have been able to pay more to increase coverage on boats and musical instruments, it is also possible to increase coverage for such things as jewelry. Try that angle with your agent and see if it gets you anywhere.

insure via your homeowner's policy. It is not implied. call your agent.

A separate rider is necessary. For each craft you supply the boat model, make, year and HIN and its replacement cost.

It will insure your boat in your home, in the yard, on the car, or even in storage.

You can insure for replacement value of your boats and gear (paddles, drysuit, etc). There is also an allowance for towing and salvage.

My cost to insure two composite seakayaks and gear is $72 per year. YMMV based on area and claim history.
