I'm looking for tips for good places to kayak/camp in the new england area and the east coast in general. Especially of interest are camping sites only reachable by water. Could someone point me towards some or possibly some resource for finding them? Checking all the individual state park/camping sites is becoming very cumbersome. Thanks!

Try the Maine Island Trail.

MITA

The trail runs the entire coast of Maine and offers numerous islands for camping. Much of the coast requires good coastal kayaking skills, much of it requires intermediate skills, and a small portion requires truly expert skills. The coast is beautiful and some of the islands are absolutely spectacular.

There are also two campgrounds on Casco Bay

Recompence Shore Camping in Freeport Maine

And Winslow Memorial Park in South Freeport (Dont have a website)

That offer superb coastal camping with wonderful kayaking, but not Island camping.

Acadia National Park also has wonderful kayaking and camping, but is crowded in the summer and the kayaking requires advanced skill.

Sagadahoc Bay Campground in Georgetown Maine has great day trip kayaking and while the campground is nothing to write home about, it's adequate.

Lobster Buoy Campsites (Sorry no website) in Thomaston is another "OK" campground with superb kayaking in Penobscot Bay and the Muscle Ridge Islands, which are wonderful but not much island camping.

Camperwest

The Adirondack Park has many spots with boat-only access to campsites. Check out the St. Regis Canoe Wilderness, The Saranac Lakes chain (especially Middle Saranac), Raquette Lake and the Whitney Wilderness (Little Tupper Lake).

there are several islands in narragansett bay. a very fun paddle with a lot to offor. this summer i camped at patience island and dutch island and i am planning hope island for next week. overnight is not allowed, but people always do it with out a problem.goodluck, and enjoy

Lamoine State Park, on the mainland opposite Bar Harbor in Maine, is also a good spot. Inexpensive, relatively quiet and laid-back, located right on Frenchman's Bay.
Cobscook State Park, at the extreme NE coastal portion of Maine, is also a good spot, although a little more rustic. The tidal fluctuations there are almost in the same league as the Bay of Fundy - I have watched islands join the mainland and then separate again with the comings and goings of the tide. Oh yes, and many of the campsites can be put-in from the campsite.

We really enjoy the Bog River Flow near Tupper Lake, NY. No motorized travel, mostly wilderness (a few legacy inholdings), lots of campsites (except on holiday weekends).
