I enjoyed reading your reports, including the one on the Apostles. Too bad the weather was not more cooperative. The Apostles are the place we paddle the most, we have paddled to all the islands at least once, so if you plan another trip there I would be happy to offer a couple of suggestions. Thank you for your advice about Tadoussac.

Georgian Bay is my love. Close for me in Southern Ontario, but where I have paddled canoes since I was a kid. Love the offshore islands, but the whole coast. I have never run into another kayaker. Just wide open.
Thanks for sharing!

I really enjoyed your trip report. I just purchased two kayaks and plan to paddle primarily on Georgian Bay. You mentioned that you encountered bears on some islands. Have you had any problems with bear proofing your campsite? I am quite used to bear proofing interior sites where there are lots of trees. Do most islands offer enough trees to hang your food pack?

I haven't had a problem with bears. There are very few trees on some of the islands so bear-proofing can be tricky. If we can hang, we do. Otherwise we double bag everything and lock it in our hatches. That is a bit risky, as a bear would probably trash the kayak to get to the food. Then you re stranded on an island with no food.

I am looking at the bear canisters as an option. The kevlar bags seem to be a good option.

Thanks Explorer, this is good information.

As per my previous post the kayaks I purchased will be primarily paddled on Georgian Bay. I went on a weeklong trip at Awenda Provincial Park last week and took the kayaks on their maiden voyage. I had a real blast out on the water. I have been camping at this spot for many years and seeing the shoreline from the kayak was totally new and exciting. I also experienced how quickly Georgian Bay conditions can change. On one of our paddles we went out in the morning and by the time we returned the wind had picked up considerably with plenty of whitecaps. The kayaks performed really well but the rough water really exposed my lack of experience. Needless to say that lessons will be in order fairly soon. Nevertheless I am going back this weekend for more paddling.
