Holy cow! You are awsome!!!! What a wonderful job you did, cataloging your trip w/wonderful, insightful writing and fantastic photography. My two kayaking buddies and I have done the Pictured Rocks and a little of the Apostle Islands, and this year we are going to finish up at the Apostles and then head on top of Superior and do Rossport and the Slate Islands (with a day stop over to paddle Duluth Harbor). I learned so much just by reading your article. Myself and my buddy Ric have plastic Old Town Cayuga's and my other friend Eric has a fiberglass Current Design. The black felt blanket will be in his kayak for our next trip;great idea on your part.
Have you ever done Rossport or the Slate Islands? or how about Thunder Bay? Two summers ago, we paddled alot of the Lake Superior Provisional Park (Old Woman's Bay and her Islands and Harbors and the Gargantua area).
Also, what camera did you use? Can't get over the quality of your photo's. We live and work in the West Michigan Area (Rockford and Muskegon) How long did it take you to travel to the Georgian Bay area?

I've paddled the Silver Islet to Rossport trip several times. There are things you should not miss. I would be happy to go over any of that with you.

That would be great to know some first hand info. We hope to spend 4-5 days of our 10 day trip at the Rossport and Slate Islands. We have been reading about the area, but your info would be great. Did you camp on the main land or on the Islands or both?

We camped on both islands and mainland. In all the trips I have been up there I have never seen any bears or any sign of bears. Although I have heard others encountering them. I don't think I have ever hung my food either. So much of the area is primitive camping with very little use so I don't know that bears are associating camping kayakers with food. Maybe around the Rossport area and closer to Silver Islet.

If you do the Silver Islet to Rossport trip which I reccomend, you should plan at least 5 days to do it. 6 days is even better. It can be done in a hurry in 4 days but what fun is that. Keep in mind I know of one trip that only made it half the distance. They were wind bound for 3 days! That was in August, not in the fall. They never even made the full trip. Skilled leaders etc.

If you have some maps you should call me. I can go through some of the cool stuff as you are looking at the maps.

Sorry for not responding Patrick. I've been traveling a bit lately.

I have not done Rossport or the Slate Islands although it is on my list. I have done Tadoussac (northeast of Quebec) kayaking with the whales, which is a three beer story for sure. I have not done Thunder Bay or the Lake Superior Provincial Park, although it was on our short list last year. Maybe this year.....

I used a small Kodak "point & shoot" camera. I just bought a Panasonic Lumix waterproof camera (tired of putting the other one in and out of the drybag). We'll see how the quality compares.

I live between Detroit & Lansing, and it takes about 11 hours to get to Killarney from there. It's an all day trip.
