Interesting story,

Last week I was working on my money pit (i.e. large pleasure boat) and a guy came up to me on his Kayak (fairly typcial). He was an obvious newbe in his 12' beginners kayak with some ridiculus extras including a lawn chair.

So I welcomed him warmly and we got to talking. It turned out that he came all the way from Albany NY (60 miles away) and traveled something like 25 miles that day; he looked like it too.

It was getting really cold that night and the wind was kicking up on the water, so he wanted to pitch a tent. Instead, I gave him my boat to stay on. He said it was the best night of sleep he's had, I felt really good about that.

In the morning, I picked him up and drove him out of my way to the next destination. We talked about a lot of things - life, jobs, love, morals, that kind of stuff. I put him in the water, and he told me he left me a note, I didn't think much of it. When I opened it, a nice letter was written along with a 100 dollar bill. I practically had tears streaming down my face.

I couldn't believe that someone that I did something for ended up doing more for me instead - both spiritually and monetarily. :-)

It turns out that he was doing it for a charity and for himself... I have been talking to him since, I thanked him but said I couldn't keep the money, I'm probably going to give it back or donate it to his charity..

PS> Strangely afer that day my Garmin GPS has gone missing... lol jk. Anyway, thanks for hearing my story... :-)

mitch, I read your story and thought about it. I didn't know whether to congratulate you, or sympathize with you for coming up short a GPS. I sure hope the feller you took in wasn't the reason for the instrument going missing.

I will say that I admire your generosity and faith in fellow humans. I'm afraid I would have to know someone a heck of a lot better to let him on the boat, let alone have it for the night.

Honestly though, in reading this guy the decision was easy.. We still talk, which reminds me I'm due to send him a text mssg..
