I bought a Werner Corryvrecken - full carbon with a bent shaft. Really pleased with it although possibly rushed the purchase and should have bought a slightly shorter version (Bought 220cm - could have gone 210cm, maybe even 205cm).

Stuck a review up on my blog if you're interested

I made both a full Greenland paddle and a storm paddle out of Eastern White Cedar. They both work well but I miss the drip ring on long journeys. You get sick of having a wet skirt all of the time. I'll try the piece of string tied near the paddle trip from the blog.
I also tipped the paddles with hammered copper instead of whale bone to push off ice flows. Works great and does not crack!
Since I carve Haida masks the knives came out and the paddles became intricately decorated with traditional designs. Also made two matching war paddles for the canoe...couldn't stop...too much snow and very cold outside so designed a cedar ceremonial box to hold all of the paddles with matching designs and snakeskin outlined with hammered copper. Included salmon motif in copper.
I love all of my paddles (both man made and machine made)!!!!

Kayakman, do you have pictures of your work? I'm sure many of us would like to see the results.

My high dollar Werner now goes along as a spare. The Sevylor feels better, is about the same weight and is far more powerful and is infinitely adjustable for feather. For me, the blade is just right for power, or cruising. I wouldn't want it one centimeter shorter either.

There are fancier paddles out there, but I don't have to feel bad if I put a little scratch in the Sevylor. If it isn't fancy enough for your primary, it sure as heck would make a great backup and my bet is that it might make first string if you give it a chance.

looked at a few paddle son their site and don't see any weights.

Dog, my latest paddle is a carbon shaft Werner Camano and it has become my number one paddle for my big boat. I still use the Sevylor Fibre Pro sometimes with the Sirocco, but I've been spoiled by the weight of the Camano (25 ounces). I think the Fibre Pro weighs about 38 ounces.

I still like the feel and performance of the Sevylor, but you sort of get what you pay for and if you want light weight, your going to pay. Watch for sales. REI occasionally has sales and some dealers will match sales.

I'm still amazed at the price of high end paddles, but I believe there are some new technologies coming down the road that will drive the price down for some pretty good paddles. Look at what H2O has to offer.

Paddle design is totally overrated. The best pair of skates in the world does not a good skater make. The same applies to paddles.
Stick with a good trusty paddle of the old design and put your efforts into training!

A number of years ago we did a series of articles about paddle design in the Sea Kayaker Newsletter. These were done in the format of a series of questions, each answered by a number of paddle designers. They are still worth a read.
