Sea Kayaker Magazine

GUIDELINES FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS, WRITERS, AND ARTISTS

Sea Kayaker is devoted solely to sea kayaks, their use, design, and history. Our articles, written by both amateur and professional writers, explore subjects in depth. Because we seek to inform, as well as entertain, we prefer contributions from experienced kayakers. Our ideal manuscript conveys interesting and useful information in clear, vivid terms.

Proposals and queries:
If you have a story idea you think might interest us, please phone, write or e-mail us to get our feedback before you set to work on an article. After we've had a chance to establish the story's suitability, we may ask you to follow up with a more detailed outline and samples of your work. If you have slides, photos or drawings that might help us in our evaluation, please send those along. You are welcome to submit finished manuscripts, but you can often save a lot of work by consulting with us before you write. We also welcome partial manuscripts, especially from new writers, so we can give you suggestions for tuning the writing to suit our readership.
Get familiar with the magazine! To gain a better understanding of the types of articles we tend to publish, look at a few back issues. You may order them via our web site or by calling (206) 789-9536. Keep in mind, however, that we welcome new ideas and approaches. Our emphasis is on touring, though we occasionally look at other aspects of the sport such as surf kayaking, ocean kayak racing, or surf skiing.

Submission requirements:
Text: If you are sending a submission by mail, we need double-spaced copy and a word processor file on disk. Articles usually run from 500 to 4,500 words, depending on the subject. Mark your disc with your name, the file name, and the program used. We prefer plain text; any fancy formatting makes conversion to our system difficult. Send a stamped, self-addressed envelope or postal coupons to cover the cost of your material's return from Seattle. Keep a copy of your text to refer to should we need to call with questions.
When submitting text via e-mail, you can cut and paste the text into the body of an e-mail message. Attached files work best for us when sent in RTF (rich text format). You can send a sampling of jpeg files for our review, but we will request original photographs, slides or drawings when making our selection of artwork.
When submitting illustrations, slides or photographs, include a list of captions or descriptions. Maps, if applicable, should accompany your submission. Mark locations as they relate to the text. We will redraw the map to meet the needs of the story.
We will acknowledge receipt of your submission as soon as possible, but it may take us some time to evaluate it. Once we have accepted an article it may be at least three months before it is published.

Photographs:
We work most often from color slides. You may send duplicates for review, but we may request originals for scanning. If you send either black-and-white or color prints we may ask for negatives so we can make prints to meet our requirements. We prefer to work with original slides instead of duplicates. We occasionally accept scans or digital photographs transmitted via the Internet. Requirements for file size vary depending upon the size the image will be reproduced in the magazine. Files should be compressed, using a Mac-compatible compression program, before transmitting.

We welcome unusual or spectacular photos suitable for our cover or our Last Glance page (a "parting shot" photo). Mark all prints and slides with your name and address. Include a description of the image identifying the location and subjects. If you mark your slides for copyright ©, please send us a signed letter authorizing us to reproduce them.

Artwork:
For our cover images we often use color artwork in any medium (oil, acrylic, watercolor, etc.) Contact us for details. We also commission artwork for inside pages.

Shipment of Materials:
When you send original photographs and artwork we recommend that you have a means of tracking your package. We will generally return materials used for publication by the same means that we receive them. Discs and reference materials-maps, sketches, etc.-will be returned around the date of publication. We take great care in handling your materials but we cannot assume responsibility for damage or loss of your contributions.

Rates:
Text: We pay a minimum of $150 per 1,000 words. Excellent writing and assigned projects may pay more.
Artwork: We pay a minimum of $350 for First North American rights for cover photographs or artwork, more for commissioned works. For other drawings and illustrations we pay between $25 and $250, depending upon size, colors and complexity. Originals will be returned to the artist.

We buy First North American Rights. We occasionally consider Second Rights if the previous publication does not have significant overlap with our readership. With the exception of assigned articles, all work received by Sea Kayaker is submitted on speculation. Simultaneous submissions or inquiries must be clearly identified as such. Contributions are paid upon publication. We will send you a copy of the issue in which your contribution appears when it is available.
