The Right Lights

By Christopher Cunningham

Editor

During the winter I often paddle in the evening, and if it’s not dark when I launch, it is by the time I head back. I’m rarely the only one out. Here in Seattle we have some waterways that are convenient for after-work workouts so I often cross paths with other kayaks, racing shells and dragon boats.

Many of the racing shells and dragon boats carry running lights: green for starboard, red for port and white all around or astern. I don’t use green and red running lights when I’m out kayaking. A white flashlight is all kayakers are required to have aboard. I stick quite close to shore and keep tabs on other vessels in the area, so I’ve never had occasion to have to use it.

Some rowers and paddlers are using lights that were never meant to be used as navigation lights. The bright flashing LED lights used on bicycles have made their way onto the water.

2012 NW Paddling Festival

NW Paddling Festival

Mark your calendar! The NW Paddling Festival will be held Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Lake Sammamish State Park.

Paddle Events and REI are proud to announce a partnering for the Northwest Paddling Festival. This new partnership will combine the Northwest Paddling Festival previously held at Jack Block Park and REI’s Paddle Demo Day previously held at Stan Sayres Memorial Park. This year the festival will be at Lake Sammamish State Park—only a 25 minute drive from downtown Seattle. Geared to both beginners and boat-lovers alike, the paddling industry will be showcasing and selling products; you can also demo kayak gear and take short kayak tours with basic kayak instruction all for a nominal fee!

Kayaks on the beach at NWPF 2011

Lake Sammamish State park is a 512-acre day-use park with 6,858 feet of waterfront on Lake Sammamish. The area around the lake was an important culture zone for local Native American tribes for centuries. The park provides deciduous forest and wetland vegetation for the enjoyment of visitors and includes diverse natural wetlands, a large great blue heron rookery and the salmon-bearing Issaquah Creek. The park has one of the largest freshwater beaches in the greater Seattle area.

SK Store - Products in the Spotlight!

We've selected two great DVDs: one focusing on "fast, simple, effective" rescues and the other a comprehensive guide on rescues, towing, technical landings and real-life rescue scenarios. Both DVDs are by renowned coaches. We've also included a compelling read, Fearless by Joe Glickman, who is also the author of The Kayak Companion.

Fearless (BK87) is a compelling read about Freya Hoffmeister’s 2009 circumnavigation of Australia. Author Joe Glickman intertwines the story of a dangerous and difficult year-long adventure with an unflinching look at "The Woman in Black," arguably the most accomplished and enigmatic kayaker on the planet. If and when you put the book down, you can follow Freya on her latest expedition, circumnavigating South America at www.Freyahoffmeister.com.

Sea Kayak Rescues (DV45), a comprehensive modern guide to rescues for all paddlers taught by world class sea kayak instructors Shawna Franklin and Leon Somme. The DVD is produced by award winning filmmaker Bryan Smith who uses stunning slow motion to illustrate details and real- time footage of rescues in tidal races, dynamic water and the open coast.
Shawna and Leon break down self and assisted rescues and show applications in flat, dynamic and rough water. Beautiful cinematography and world class instruction combine in a unique and effective instructional film. 30 Minutes/Extras include a 3 skills video on edging, bow rudder and stern rudders.

Sea Kayak with Gordon Brown, Vol 2 (DV46)

Gordon Brown is the top UK coach of Skyak Adventures. Join this thrilling adventure by watching the journey to the islands of St. Kilda while he demonstrates essential rescue techniques. Includes Archive cine footage of first St. Kilda kayak crossing.

  • Rescues, self rescues and practice exercises
  • Contact tows and distance tows
