SK Newsletter: November 4, 2009

I recently attended the Calusa Blueway Paddling Festival (held October 23 through November 1) in Fort Meyers Beach, Florida, and I was more than a little pleased with my experience there. My homecoming in Seattle found me kissed by the sun, excited about a new and very promising event, and most importantly, very flattered by a couple of our subscribers whom I met at the festival.
I attend quite a few paddling shows each year and get an opportunity to meet a fair number of our readers. This past weekend was no exception, but two readers added a whole new dimension to the story.

On Saturday night at a barbecue Sea Kayaker co-hosted, I was introduced to one of our subscribers, a paddler by the name of Bill Anthony from Woodbury, Connecticut. Bill saw the ad for the Calusa Blueway Paddling Festival in the October ‘09 issue of Sea Kayaker magazine. Apparently Bill liked what he saw, so he loaded his boat on his car and drove 1,345 miles to Florida to attend the festival and have a paddling vacation.
To say that I was flattered by his response to the advertisement is an understatement. Better yet, history repeated itself the very next day at a pig roast hosted at the San Carlos RV Park. Ben Onderdunk of Mobile, Alabama, introduced himself to me with the same story. Bill had read about the festival in Sea Kayaker then traveled 632 miles with his Tiderace Excite on his roof rack to attend.
For those manufacturers out there reading this newsletter, yes, print advertising, needless to say, is very much alive!
