When our ad manager, Paul Riek, and I saw the SPOT messenger device introduced at a trade show a couple of years ago, we both knew that the device was going to find a place on board a lot of kayaks. Having a compact, affordable GPS-connected distress signal would provide for a quick rescue that used a minimum of Search and Rescue resources. On top of that the device would allow kayakers to send “I’m OK” messages back home. The GPS coordinates would be included in that message so friends and family could follow your progress on Google Earth.
You can read our review of the SPOT in our August 2008 issue or online at the Sea Kayaker website. Johnson Outdoors also saw the match between SPOT and kayakers and have arranged with SPOT to provide the satellite messenger device along with many of the kayaks they sell. It’s a great program destined to keep sea kayakers safer and to provide their families with peace of mind. You can read more about Johnson Outdoors’ program here.
