Local Notice to Mariners
By Michael Collins
Publisher
On a summer weekend last year, I received a cell phone call from the leader of a group of kayakers who had suddenly found themselves in the middle of what appeared to be an organized cigarette boat race (cigarette boats are designed as high power offshore race boats). After a couple of near misses the leader was able to get his group back on shore and had called to see if I had any way of finding out what was going on and whether it was now safe to resume their paddle.
My first impulse was to check the Local Notice to Mariners for our waters, in this case the 13th Coast Guard District.

Who Writes for Sea Kayaker?
By Christopher Cunningham
Editor
Who writes for Sea Kayaker? In a word, and as a rule, kayakers. The only real qualification we have for our contributors is that they have an experience, an idea or an expertise that our readers would find interesting or useful. We do occasionally hear from folks who write for a living, but if they don’t have some personal connection with sea kayaking there isn’t a place for them in our pages. More often we hear from kayakers who have an idea for an article, but little or no experience with writing. Those are the folks we like to hear from. We can coach a kayaker with a good story to tell or a technique to share through the writing much easier than we can coach a writer through the ins and outs of kayaking.

Tips for Better Kayaking and Camping
Warm up your back before paddling. Many paddle strokes, such as a reverse sweep, stern rudder, and most rolling techniques require you to twist and lean back. A cold, stiff back will rebel against such treatment with muscle spasms or the painful, sometimes debilitating effects of an injured sciatic nerve. Warm up your back by gently flexing your torso left, right, front and back. Include some gentle torso twists with smooth, continuous motions.
