Boat Raffle for Sea Kayaker Magazine Subscribers
By Paul R. Riek
Advertising and Promotions Manager
The prize: A special P&H Team edition of the Cetus LV made specifically for the winning Sea Kayaker magazine subscriber.
In the December ’09 issue of Sea Kayaker we announced a change in the way we are doing our raffles. Effective January 1, 2010 only Sea Kayaker magazine subscribers are eligible for our raffles. All raffle entries must be made on-line and the entry form will be found at www.seakayakermag.com. Raffle entries must include the SK number found on your subscriber copy address label.
When I am putting together the prizes for our raffles the question I ask myself is: “Would I be excited if I won this?” For the Cetus LV my answer would be an emphatic “Yes!” We’ll be featuring a review of the Cetus LV in the February 2010 issue of Sea Kayaker, so make sure and check that out to learn more about the kayak. One of our kayak reviewers said the Cetus LV was “definitely one for the short list.” Another wrote he “would add this boat to my quiver given the chance.” Here’s your chance!
The lucky subscriber will work with the manufacturer to pick out the colors and outfitting options. The kayak will be adorned with the P&H Team logo, and proudly display the Sea Kayaker magazine logo as well. All the winning subscriber has to do is get to their nearest P&H dealer to pick up the prize.
The raffle begins January 1, 2010. Look for the link on our home page at www.seakayakermag.com!

In the Swim

There are two things I like about winter paddling: the water is a lot more interesting than it is in summer, and when I’m dressed for the water temperature (50°F /10°C) I’m not overdressed for the air temperature. There are times in the summer when I’ve been bundled up and sealed in a drysuit when the air temperature is pushing 80°F/ 27°C and I can get a bit toasty. But in winter, if the air temperature is getting close to freezing, a drysuit over layers of poly pile is a very comfortable outfit.
Since I rely on my drysuit to keep me comfortable and safe almost year round I need to be sure it is in good condition.

All Things Subscribed
By Ann Eastwood
Circulation/E-Commerce Coordinator
At Sea Kayaker we handle magazine circulation in house so we answer questions about subscriptions and fix problems. We're lucky to connect with subscribers and sometimes have a chance to hear about a paddling trip or accomplishment.
Recently I had a conversation with Norman in Great Britain. He had called to say he had received a damaged copy and I promised to send a replacement right away. He replied “You're a real brick!” We don’t hear that term around here, but in England a brick is a thoroughly decent, honest person. Now that's a label I can live with!
Subscription renewals are a welcome sight in our daily mail. Jackie sometimes finds special mementos included in the envelopes. One subscriber sent a poem about renewing:
I pondered long my Sea-Kayaker subscription to renew,
I have only one kayak and it’s hardly new.
But Jonathon Westaway*, no Conrad nor yet a Melville he,
Kept me enthralled, laughing loud and full of glee.
Tales of the vasty deep some others may describe,
Leviathans may ‘neath our keels lie,
(Real, or imagined, their fables never die.)
But tales of driving rain and whisky antidote to biting flies,
“Long dark tea times of the soul” (we know them well),
(We enter willingly into self-imposed hells.)
Provide sufficient merriment
To pay up three year’s subscription rent.

Another subscriber occasionally includes an origami kayak with his renewal. The paper kayaks decorate the edge of Jackie’s computer monitor, ready to paddle an imaginary water trail.

We welcome all subscribers, new and renewing. If you already subscribe to Sea Kayaker we hope you’ll consider giving a friend a gift subscription, DVD or book about kayaking. There’s a variety of items to choose from! Visit our online store at www.seakayakermag.com
We also encourage you to support your local water trail. Keep launch sites accessible!
