A Bright New Day….
By Paul Riek
Advertising and Promotions Manager
As I write this article, the news headlines are about the Dow falling significantly, real estate values dropping, gas prices are fluctuating, impending layoffs not only from city, county and state jobs but also some major employers in our state as well. This situation is not limited just to my state— this is on a global level.
There are no two ways of putting it: Our world has changed and there are a lot of people concerned right now about what the future is going to bring and that creates an overwhelming situation for the kayaking business community.

Thanksgiving
With Thanksgiving coming up we thought it appropriate to look back into the history of that holiday. While it is often thought of as a celebration of abundance, it has been at times a bittersweet holiday. The first Thanksgiving that we think of as the origin of the modern holiday occurred in 1621, and was a gathering attended by the Mayflower pilgrims and the Wampanoag natives. Of the 102 Mayflower passengers who settled Plymouth, scarcely more than half survived the winter of 1620 to take part in the Thanksgiving celebration in the autumn of the following year. The date we now celebrate Thanksgiving, the third Thursday in November, became a national holiday by proclamation of President Lincoln in 1863 in the midst of the Civil War. The economic uncertainty that we are living through now is not something that should diminish our celebration of Thanksgiving. The holiday gets its real significance in hard times.
Anyone reading this electronic newsletter has a lot to be thankful for and all of us at Sea Kayaker wish to join you in celebrating the good fortune that still surrounds us. We're thankful to have so many of you in our community and we wish you the very best in the observation of this important holiday.
