Q&A
PFD (Personal Flotation Device) Design
In the years that sea kayaking has been developing as a sport, PFDs have come a long way to meet the specific requirements of our sport. Find out what the designers of PFDs do to make their products do much more than just keep us afloat. This is the second series of questions on PFDs.
How does the distribution of foam affect performance when a paddler is in the kayak and in the water? What are your goals when designing panels?
After PFD pockets gained USCG approval, PFDs have served touring kayakers as flotation and as gear vests. How do you design pockets to suit the needs of kayakers? Can you overload the pockets and compromise flotation?

Julie Anderson Says Goodbye
After serving nine years as our Circulation and Promotions Manager, Julie Anderson has left Sea Kayaker magazine. Our loss is another’s gain and fortunately for all of us, she remains part of the sea kayaking community. Julie has taken the position of Executive Director of Washington Water Trails. We wish her the best in her move to the new position. Two of the water trails Julie will be working on meet right outside the Sea Kayaker office, so we look forward to seeing her out on the water. Happy paddling Julie!
Tips for Better Kayaking
Make your sprayskirt release loop easy to grab. Loops made of nylon webbing tend to get folded under so they can’t release the sprayskirt. Wrap electrical tape around the webbing to make a stiff loop that’s easier to feel and less likely to fold under. Or attach a large plastic bead to the webbing.

A Case Study in Advertising with Sea Kayaker
By Paul Riek
Advertising Manager
The peak season for kayaking has started and I thought that this would be a perfect time to discuss my favorite subject: advertising with Sea Kayaker magazine.
Here’s how advertising works at Sea Kayaker. Typically we meet new manufacturers and service providers at the numerous consumer shows and symposiums we attend throughout the country each year. Oftentimes our advertising relationship begins with the introduction of a new product that is included in either a review or a new product listing in our magazine.
I should point out that there is no connection between having a product reviewed or listed in the magazine and being an advertiser. The selection of products and services that appear in editorial content in the magazine is not dependent upon having an ad in the magazine. However, we’ve found that the response our readers have to the editorial coverage in the publication produces such a positive response for companies that they come to us to continue their presence in the magazine through advertising.
