A Tip for Better Kayaking (Camping)

Before you buy a tent, climb inside it. Sit around, invite in a friend, and bring in a couple of dry bags full of gear. Could you comfortably change your clothes in there? Can you get in and out the door without crawling?

   Water Trails

Water trails have been an important part of the sea kayaking scene for the past two decades. The trails help preserve access to the water, establish and maintain campsites, promote low-impact forms of recreation and create communities of stewardship to watch over our waterways. In this issue of the SK Newsletter, as well as in past issues, we’d like to introduce you to water trails long and short and urge you to support them in their efforts to give us places to paddle.

General overview of trail:

In September 2004 legislation was signed authorizing the establishment of the Niagara River Greenway Commission. The Commission was charged with the responsibility for developing a plan that would define the future of the Niagara River corridor between Lakes Erie and Ontario.

During the late spring of 2006, the Niagara River Greenway Commission was asked to identify and organize an event that would draw people to the Niagara River. The intent was to give people an opportunity to experience the natural, cultural and historic attributes of this internationally renowned water resource. A paddlesports event was selected as the best way to achieve this goal. "Paddles Up Niagara" was thus established deriving its name from the custom where canoe travelers approaching a Native American village would point their paddles skyward to signify their intent to land in peace. Over one hundred kayaks and canoes participated in the 2006 inaugural event and more than double that amount participated in 2007.
