      Water Trails

Water trails have been an important part of the sea kayaking scene for the past two decades. The trails help preserve access to the water, establish and maintain campsites, promote low-impact forms of recreation and create communities of stewardship to watch over our waterways. In this issue of the SK Newsletter, as well as in past and future issues, we’d like to introduce you to water trails long and short and urge you to support them in their efforts to give us places to paddle.

A water trail is simply defined as a path on a waterway connected through signs, maps and access points providing a scenic and educational experience for recreational, non-motorized users. Since the winter of 2004 a group of local citizens, the Tillamook County Water Trail Committee, has met around a shared vision of developing a recreational water trail system throughout Tillamook County, encompassing the area's abundant rivers, sloughs, and bays. The idea of the water trail is that if the people are coming to the area to paddle, then let’s provide them with information so their experience, and ours, is a good one.

The Nehalem River is the first of five Tillamook County Water Trails to be developed, and the Nehalem is a natural to be first in line. There are excellent recreational paddling opportunities for every skill level from novice to advanced whitewater. The Nehalem River traverses through thick green forests, rock lined gorges, and continues out to grassy meadows and green estuaries. The wildlife is as diverse as the terrain. Eagles, elk, salmon, songbirds and seabirds are regulars along the lower 30-mile stretch of the Nehalem.

     New Year’s Resolution

by Paul Riek

I've never been a big fan of New Year’s resolutions. Quite frankly I always thought they said more about how unhappy or unsatisfied people were with their past year than about what was going to be different in the coming year. If you’re going to change your life drastically or go in some new direction, you’re going to have to do something. A New Year’s resolution isn’t a magic spell that is going to change everything.

As someone who has normally been happy with life as it is, I didn’t feel the need to make any resolutions. Yet at New Year’s parties people always ask about my resolutions, and saying I don’t have any doesn’t go over too well. It sounds like I am either smug or lazy. So for the past 10 years I just answer, "My resolution is to lose 20 lbs and make six figures." Sounds good, right? No one is going to argue with losing weight and making more money. I know it’s not going to happen and they know it’s not going to happen, but it gets me through New Years Eve.

Well, this past year has been a really weird one for me, and there have been a lot of changes- some for the better, some not.
