This
issue of the SK Newsletter we’re taking a look
at the North Atlantic, a region in our Resource Section
and our web-page advertising links. It’s a very
big area stretching from New York City, the heart of
the business world, to Halifax, the heart of the Canadian
Maritimes.
Having grown up in western New York, I know
from experience there is nothing better than that first
day in spring when you can feel that winter has released
the land from its icy grip. The weather in the North
Atlantic is getting a bit warmer and the people in the
area are getting out more and enjoying the outdoors.
Over the course of a few short weeks, life changes: snow
tires come off the cars and winter wardrobes go back
into the closet. Window screens replace storm windows,
and patio furniture comes out of storage to bask in
the sun.
If you live in the North Atlantic, I’d
encourage you to take a break after your spring chores
and take advantage of the services offered by our advertisers
that provide kayaking services in the area. Whether
you are a college student looking to go play, a young
adult looking to make a weekend into an adventure or,
like me, just hoping to make the best of my time away
from the office, there is a wonderful variety to be
found in the area. If you are already thinking of paddling
anywhere in the region, the knowledgeable folks who
advertise with us would be happy to hear from you while
you are doing your planning. |

 Cape
Cod offers some of the best paddling in the country,
with warm waters well into October. Pristine salt
marsh habitats and an abundance of town , state,
and federally owned conservation land offer paddlers
a close up experience of rare birds such as the Great
Blue Heron, the green heron, and the osprey. The
clear shallow waters of many salt marshes will also
allow a paddler to observe spider crabs, horseshoe
crabs, and hermit crabs in their own habitat, without
the worry of jet ski's or larger motor craft intruding.
For those who prefer the vast expanse of sky and sea, their are many
islands accessible from the mainland of Cape Cod, including Martha's
Vineyard and Nantucket, for the more adventurous. Day trippers can make
a short juant to Washburn Island in Waquoit Bay, where waterfront campsites
are available with a permit. Cape Cod Kayak regularly delivers kayaks
to public launches with parking for cars that have easy access to Washburn.
Permits can be acquired by calling 1800-CAMP-USA.
And nothing, but nothing beats a sunset over Buzzards Bay!

 Nova
Scotia, despite it's beautifully convoluted coast,
with many secluded bays, pretty harbours, and unihabited
islands, has not yet been discovered by mainstream
paddlers. Those who do come enjoy private campsites,
sandy bays with waters that warm up for about two
months each year, and the joy of feeling alone with
their discoveries. With sailing and Zodiac support
to make advanced exploration safer and more luxurious,
Freewheeling Adventures plans and customizes inn-to-inn
and comfortable camping trips for individuals or
groups.
