Common kayaking gear currently prohibited in carry-on and checked baggage by the FAA, TSA or airlines:
• Aquaseal and other adhesives, solvents and cleaners used for repairs
• Bear repellent
• Bleach or other water-purification chemicals
• Camp stoves that have previously contained liquid fuel
• Candles
• Canned fuel (butane, propane)
• Chemical heat packs
• Epoxy (liquid, putty)
• Fire starters (Vaseline and cotton, paraffin-soaked wood chips, chemical tabs, flammable liquids, etc.)
• Fuel bottles that have been used, even if emptied of fuel
• Gas lanterns
• Goop and similar adhesives
• Lighters (butane, lighter fluid)•
• Liquid fuel (gas, alcohol, kerosene)
• Magnesium (fire starter)
• Matches (kitchen/strike-anywhere)
• Signal flares and smoke signals
• Water marker dyes
• Can openers
• Chemicals for portable toilet systems
• Fishing hooks
• Knives and tools with cutting blades (sharp items must be sheathed to protect baggage handlers)
•Light sticks
• Sharp-tipped scissors 4 inches long or longer (blunt trauma scissors are generally permitted in carry-ons)
• CO_ cartridges with inflatable PFD plus two spares (upon approval of aircraft operator)
• Laser rescue signal devices (refer to them as signaling devices, not as laser flares)
• Lithium batteries—those used in cameras and flashlights (CR 123 are common) are permitted. All permitted dry-cell batteries must be packed in a manner that prevents short-circuiting.
• Safety match books (four per passenger max.) permitted only in carry-on baggage.
