BEST DRY BAG
The Sea-Stow from NRS
Sea-Stow from NRSThe Sea-Stow dry bags are an elegant solution to the problem of keeping gear dry in a marine environment. They’re a combination of polyurethane-coated nylon and clear vinyl. The vinyl window lets you know at a glance what’s in the bag, even if it’s stuffed at the bottom. That’ll save time finding the gear you need when you’re setting up camp and give you peace of mind when packing the kayak and seeing everything one last time before you seal the hatches.
The vinyl is also used for the mouth of the bag. It’s almost sticky, and when it gets folded between and rolled around the two black strips at the top of the bag, the seal is airtight: You can squeeze that bag hard and won’t hear air hissing through the closure. The seams are all welded. The only stitching is in the ends of the webbing where the buckle halves and a D ring are secured.
The bottom of the round-bottomed version of the bag is made with a thicker fabric for greater puncture and wear resistance. The flat bag has grommets in the corners.
If you remember the movie The Man With the X-Ray Eyes, you’re old enough to have realized that five minutes after you pack a dry bag, you won’t know what’s in the bottom of it. In the end, X-ray vision turned out to be a curse, but a good dry bag with a window will always be a blessing.

BEST CAR-TOP CARRIER
HullyRollers from Yakima
HullyRollers from YakimaMy back is in pretty good shape, and I intend to keep it that way, so I’m careful when I lift kayaks—especially the heavy rotomolded ones—onto my van’s roof racks. If I’m on my own, it’s easiest if I lift the bow to the rear roof rack, then move to the stern and slide the boat forward to rest on both racks. The HullyRollers are specifically designed for this back-saving loading M.O.
A set of the HullyRollers has four cushioned wheels on articulated brackets. Set the bow of your kayak between the rollers (you can pad the rack’s cross bar there if you like), move to the stern and push the kayak forward. The rollers keep the kayak centered and well supported. Once the kayak is in position, two of the wheels get locked with a pin.
You can use either a second set of HullyRollers on the forward rack, but you really don’t need the extra wheels. Most folks with HullyRollers use a set of Yakima’s Mako cradles up front. The brackets are easily loosened to adjust the HullyRollers to fit different boats.
